Work produced during MAM // Media Art Morocco 2016 Digital Marrakech Media Art Morocco: Exploring the Latest Practices in Digital Arts Discover the 5th edition of the Digital Marrakech Media Art Morocco (MAM), a symposium dedicated to digital arts that was held in May 2016. This event brought together artists, experts, and enthusiasts to explore trends such as digital cinema, multimedia performances, and video installations, while promoting intercultural exchanges. Organized by Arab Media Lab, MAM aimed to strengthen the media arts scene in Morocco and the Arab world, providing young artists with masterclasses, roundtable discussions, and networking opportunities. The event was a must-attend for creation, innovation, and artistic collaboration. The Franco-Algerian artist led a masterclass with a number of students. The workshop « In the Urban Body, » directed by artist Halida Boughriet at the École des Beaux-Arts of Toulon, was conceived as a necessary initiative for first-year students. Over three days, this workshop allowed participants to explore the interactions between urban space and individual identities, integrating theoretical concepts derived from Édouard Glissant’s thought, notably the distinction between globalization and mondialité (worldliness). The aim of the workshop was to introduce students to artistic performance as a means of exploring and expressing their unique identities within public space. Emphasizing photography as a medium of expression, students were encouraged to engage in a dialogue with their immediate environment. The pedagogical approach highlighted the art of gesture, gender identity, and social norms—key elements in constructing identity within the urban context. Drawing on Glissant’s ideas, the workshop fostered a deep reflection on creolization and cultural mixing, providing a framework for students to consider their own identities within a plural society. This perspective enriched discussions on how identities are woven through human interactions, particularly in urban settings often perceived as spaces of tension and encounters. Filmer le passé, en particulier le passé « exceptionnel », douloureux comme celui des camps d’internement, représente un véritable défi pour les arts visuels. Face à l’absence de témoignages directs, l’artiste tente de reconstruire et reconstituer une réalité qui a existé autrefois, mais qui n’est plus aujourd’hui. L’histoire qu’elle retrace peut être évoquée non seulement à travers des fragments subsistants de cette réalité passée – clôtures, murs, fontaines, magasins, etc. – mais aussi à travers les souvenirs, la valeur symbolique que certains objets continuent de porter, en parallèle avec des sensations, désormais dans une réalité complètement différente. Alors, l’enjeu ici réside dans l’énigme : comment filmer le paradigme de la perte ? Est-il transcriptible ou représentable en image ? Filmer le passé ne peut se limiter à un simple acte documentaire.
